WHEREAS:

WHEREAS, forty percent of all food grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted; food waste makes up to 20 percent of trash; and up to two-thirds of wasted food could have been eaten; and
WHEREAS, preventing food waste is one of the foundational strategies of the county’s Climate Action Plan; and
WHEREAS, preventing food waste by rescuing edible food increases food security and reduces disparities in health; and
WHEREAS, preventing food waste is one of the highest impact zero-waste actions identified in the county’s plan to reinvent the solid waste system; and
WHEREAS, the county is developing a first of its kind Wasted Food Prevention Plan, because it focuses solely on preventing wasted food, rather than relying on composting to divert food from the trash; and
WHEREAS; Hennepin County’s Wasted Food Prevention Plan sets an ambitious food waste prevention target - Cut discarded edible food in half; and
WHEREAS; the county's plan aligns with the state's hierarchy for food waste, which prioritizes reducing the amount generated at the source and upcycling or donating; and
WHEREAS, Hennepin County will advance programs, policies and partnerships to cut wasted food in homes, schools, and businesses, as well as support the food rescue system.
Resolution:
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners proclaims April 7 -13, 2025, as Food Waste Prevention Week and encourages all residents to commit to reducing food waste in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
