Commendation of Lisa Richardson upon her retirement - offered by Commissioner Fernando

WHEREAS, Lisa Richardson began her captioning career as a court reporter in 1976; and
WHEREAS, she moved to Minnesota in 1988 to begin captioning for KARE 11 as the first news station in the state and eighth station in the country to have live, on-air captions; and
WHEREAS, Lisa began her own captioning business in 1990, and merged with multiple captioning agencies as the business of captioning continued to grow and change over the years; and
WHEREAS, she began captioning for the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners in 1995 when real-time, closed captioning was first implemented for Hennepin County board meetings; and
WHEREAS, real-time, closed captioning has improved the transparency and accessibility of board meetings for Hennepin County residents; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson has also worked closely with the Minnesota legislature, local professional sports teams, the University of Minnesota and the Hearing Loss Association of America, to increase accessibility across multiple industries and organizations; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson has spent nearly 30 years committed to serving the residents of Hennepin County through the important accessibility work of closed captioning.
Resolution:
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners acknowledges Lisa Richardson’s accomplishments, commitment and dedication to the county, its residents, and accessibility for all and wishes her well in retirement.
