Background:

Congenital syphilis (CS) occurs when syphilis passes to babies during pregnancy. Syphilis is an STI that can cause serious health problems without treatment. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) indicated CS cases have more than tripled in recent years in the United States, with nearly 4,000 cases reported in 2024 alone. The population of Hennepin County Public Health’s Healthcare for the Homeless program is very high risk, especially those who are childbearing age without a contraceptive plan.

The donated supplies include 4 boxes tube holders, 1 box female luer adaptor, 40 boxes vacutainers, 10 boxes 23G butterfly needles, 5 boxes 25 G butterfly needles, 6 biohazard totes, 2 specimen transport containers, 3 boxes 5 mL luer lock syringes, 12 boxes 1-1/2 in 18G needle, 1 box 18G filter needles, 2 medicine coolers to transport bicillin, and Segmented backpack for doxycycline outreach.

Hennepin County Public Health is seeking approval of Agreement A2613615 on behalf of the Healthcare for the Homeless program. In addition, the department requests the Board accept the congenital syphilis outreach testing and treatment supplies from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

This request supports disparity elimination in the health domain by accepting a donation of supplies that will be used for outreach testing and treatment of congenital syphilis.
